DOVER BEACH

Dover beach is one of the famous poem in the world, the author is Matthew Arnold and it has published in London at 1851. There are four stanzas in this poem. The meaning from this poem is all about sadness, and in this poem have some beautiful words to describe about sadness. In this poem also giving the imagined about the beauty of beach, and from this word have a lot of meaning to knowing about this meaning.

In the first stanza, there are some sentences giving the imagined about beauty of beach. The situation of the beach in the night is very calm, with the big wavy and the beautiful of moon. So, the dark situation and the sound of arranged wavy make this place looked calm. In this poem say that, on the French coast the light gleams and is gone, I think it is a lighthouse.

Lighthouse is a tower or other type of structure designed to emit light from a system of lamps and lenses or, in older times, from a fire, and used as an aid to navigation for maritime pilots at sea or on inland waterways. I have opinion about it because this poem giving description with some words, there are gleams, light, and gone. The symbol is clearly showing that is a lighthouse.

In this poem, there is a home, and the location is near from beach. The situation is very cool because wind of beach. In the beach can looking the lighthouse, and the location of the lighthouse at French. They can looking stone in the beach from home, and can looking beauty of beach from there. The big wavy giving effect sound, this sound effect is strong and the incident happened to be repeated.

There are some words have meaning, and this meaning give me conclusion about sadness. This words such as lighthouse, and the wavy. Because they can giving effect be repeated this incident, and it can imagined about sadness which happened since in the past, maybe until now like as the lighthouse and the wavy.

The tone in this stanza from this poem is sad. This author in the first stanza want to giving the scenery about the beauty of beach and giving the description about sadness someone in the past until now and not finish. It can image the activity from the wavy and the lighthouse. It is already clear to showing the meaning from this poem.

In the second stanza, there is a sentence say that Sophocles long ago, it can means about something happen in the past and have relation with Sophocles. Sophocles is one of three ancient Greek tragedians whose plays have survived, he is a playwright of Greek plays and he writing Oedipus. Aegean also have relation with Sophocles, Aegean is a Greek region.

In this poem still telling about the beach with the big wavy. The illustration from this poem is the situation of the beach, the big wavy and to be repeated. The sand to following with the wavy, and the water to be turbid, because the sand and the water to be mixed. This description of the situation in the  beach have meaning about sadness.

In the second stanza have meaning about sadness, it can be looking from the situation of the wavy and the sand in the beach. There are to be mixed and the effect from it is making dirty of water. It means that, the sadness story. From the wavy to be repeated and the sand it is a colony from another region. It also can to giving description about the fight to accompany of region, and the effect from this fighting is the turbid of water, it means that the victim from the fight.

The third stanza have description about the situation in the beach, it also telling about situation in the world, that the around of world is a sea. So the sea around the world, and in the reality, almost a half of the world is the sea. Whereas, in the first and second stanza telling about sadness story, and the description from it make philosophy of beach, make the sound of wavy, to be repeated and make the pebble be struck by the wavy, make the wavy and the sand and than make this water to be dirty.

So, the third stanza telling about suffering the citizen in a town, because they have to colonize from another town, it can give us suffering to the citizen. In this stanza explain that the citizen doesn’t doing anything because the around already mastered by opponent. Because in this stanza say that the situation from the world surrounded by sea. It can giving the description about the situation there.

In the third stanza also giving description that the sea giving symbol about sadness, because in this poem have some activity in the beach with all of the composed there. Whereas, the sea usually have symbol about fighter, because the activity in the sea giving description about the spirit from the activity of the wavy.

In the four stanza just giving information about the character in this world, especially for all of human in the world. Now, the character human in the world is weak, they are doesn’t to opponent another town. They are have character to delegate with the situation in around it.

In this poem have some figures of speech, such as metaphor and simile. The example of metaphor is “which the waves draw back”, the comparison of the eaves to an intelligent entity that reject that which it has captured. In the another sentence is “ turbid ebb and flow of human misery”, the comparison of human misery to the ebb and flow of the sea.

The another figures of speech is simile, it can looking in this sentence “ the sea of  faith...lay like the folds of a bright girdle furled”, it means that the use of like to compare the world to a land of the dreams. And there are some another figures of speech, but I can giving the example just about it.

The time and place in the night and the place in the house and the location of it is near from beach, in this poem giving the description about situation there. I have thinking about it because in this poem giving description about the situation clearly. The situation there is calm, because it has looked clearly.

The point of view in this poem it is from the author. The author like in this beach  and it has giving information and telling about the situation by the way the author. It is also like a privacy of implementation. The situation in this poem is sadness, because from first stanza until last it just telling about sad story, the implementation in the past.
